Step 1: Ask Yourself the Hard Questions

Grab a journal and answer honestly:


Are you excited to get up in the morning?
Are you excited about your current relationship or have you settled? Have you normalized your needs not getting met? (remind you of anything? 🧐 )
When you look in each others eyes do you still see love, passion, or a dullness and disappointment?• Do you like what you see when you look in the mirror?
Are you proud of how you take care of your body and finances?
Is there a quiet but persistent ache for more?

Your answers are powerful clues. And if you’re not satisfied with what you wrote down, it’s okay. Just notice. Because recognizing patterns is the beginning of real change.


Step 2: Understand Your Stories

If you've been through trauma, you’ve likely created stories around the pain. These stories aren’t bad—they’re actually gold. They hold the keys to your healing. But repeating them over and over without shifting the meaning keeps you stuck. Understand your story but stop feeding them because you are reinforcing the pattern.

Step 3: The “Aha” That Changed My Life

Years ago, a brief dating relationship cracked open a deep childhood wound I hadn’t fully healed. It was the one domino knocked over that healed all the rest. ...when she compared me to her ex, I noticed my body tensed up. That night, instead of distracting myself, I sat and breathed into the discomfort.


What came next changed everything.


Over the next few days, I had a profound emotional release—deep sobbing, shaking, grief. I saw how, from the moment I was born, I had assigned meaning to events: “I’m not enough. I’m flawed. I’m alone.” These meanings shaped my entire life. Shaped ALL my decisions.


When I faced this reality completely, trauma finally lost it's grip on me from that day forward.


I got this "full body" aha moment, and so can you. I've had dozens of clients experience the same thing.

Step 4: Take Healthy Responsibility

Yes, bad things may have happened to you. And yes, no one else will ever fully understand your pain. And never forget, you are the only one who can shift the meaning those experiences still carry. Take these words to heart.


Taking responsibility for the meanings you’ve assigned—no matter how young you were when they were formed—is the fastest way to create change.


Do You Have Developmental Trauma?

Here are common signs:


Low self-worth, negative body image, or shame
Sense of not belonging anywhere (Feel lost, have none or only a few friends, no one reaches out to you to do stuff, one sided friendships, insatiable desire for some place to feel like home)
Fear of intimacy or vulnerability
Struggles with money, health, or self-care
Addictions or obsessive behaviors
Regular conflict in relationships
A persistent sense that something is missing

If these resonate, you’re not broken. You’ve just adapted to survive. And now you can learn to tweak those adaptations to learn instead how to thrive.
